Beyond Boundaries Lecture Series 17 | Cultivating Motivation and Self-regulation in English-medium Instruction and Learning: From passive learning to autonomy

Speaker:

Dr. Barry BAI, tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on motivation, self-regulated learning, andsocial and emotional learning, particularly among school students. He has led large-scale projects connecting research with classroom practice across Hong Kong schools.

Abstract:

Studying in English is hard for many Asian students - not just because of the linguistic distance, but also because classroom instruction often fails to equip students with the skills to regulate their own learning. Self-regulated learning(SRL) is exactly that skill: planning, monitoring, and steering your own learning. This lecture will examine what motivates students to use SRL, and share concrete classroom strategies that nurture independent, self-directed learners. All disciplines welcome.
