The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will host an Introduction to Mentimeter open to all faculty members looking to explore innovative teaching tools and enhance student participation in the classroom. Join this live training session to learn how to use Mentimeter to increase engagement, participation and feedback in your classes. No registration needed!

1. What is Mentimeter?

Mentimeter is a web-based student engagement platform that requires no software downloads or hardware purchases. Students simply use their own phones, tablets, or computers to participate in real-time classroom interaction. The platform offers a variety of interactive options including multiple choice, word clouds, open-ended questions, scales, rankings, Q&A, and quiz competitions.

Abstract:

The challenges of AI to teachers are of course unprecedented, and unbeatable. If Tittytainment is designed to distract the young minds from hard work, AI allows them to believe that hard work is no longer necessary. We are fighting for the attention of students fully occupied with all kinds of AI powered tittytainment, in a futile way, in the classroom. Many of you may feel the same way I do: a strong sense of hopelessness, helplessness, and wasting of time. How can we attract attention of students back to academic inquiries and fascination, literary expression and articulation, cultural jewelries and celebration, to where learning can be learned? This sharing may not be able to provide an answer. All I can do is to review the different phases of my teaching years and various approaches derived from the educational and psychological theories that we learn along the way, and describe my recent attempts to reach the young souls of the few listeners in the classroom.

Creativity, Participation, and Purpose

Abstract: Traditional views of creativity often focus on the work of sole individuals. But in reality, creativity is not an individual endeavor; rather, it is a distributed and participatory process. In this session, Edward Clapp—a Principal Investigator at Harvard Project Zero and the Founder and CEO of the Next World Learning Lab—will introduce you to the concept of Participatory Creativity, a socially distributed approach to idea development. Clear connections will be made between participation in creative idea development and establishing a sense of purpose. Participants will understand how finding a sense of purpose through creative participation is one of the most important parts of engaging in undergraduate education. Beyond theory, practical tools will be shared that nurture and make visible one’s profile of participation.
