CTL Spark Fund

Spark Ignites, Cultivating a New Chapter: The 2026 CTL Spark Fund Officially Sets Sail
On the afternoon of October 20, the 2026 CTL Spark Fund Opening Presentation was successfully held in CC126. The 10 funded interdisciplinary faculty-student teams presented their project proposals at the event. Professor Yu HUANG, Associate Vice President (Institutional Advancement) and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Vivien CHAN, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, and faculty and student representatives from the funded teams attended the event.
"Spark" — a spark begins with a small yet bright collision. It could be a question lingering in the classroom, a chat after class, or an unsolved mystery that both faculty and students are curious about. When these small sparks are seen and supported, they can converge into a force that drives transformative change in teaching and learning. The 2026 CTL Spark Fund was created precisely to protect these sparks.
Dr. Vivien CHAN, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Acting Registrar of the Academic Registry, and Associate Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted the event. She expressed sincere gratitude to all teams that submitted proposals and introduced the review arrangements and selection process for this year's program. She encouraged everyone to embrace cutting-edge trends such as artificial intelligence, while staying grounded in the characteristics and practical needs of their respective disciplines to explore diverse co-creation pathways in humanities, business, and other fields.
"In a rapidly changing world, education must evolve with it. The university supports you in exploring those unknown possibilities." In his opening remarks, Professor Yu HUANG, Associate Vice President (Institutional Advancement) and Dean of the Graduate School, conveyed firm support to the faculty and students present. He noted that this year's program received 47 proposals, a significant increase from 29 last year, and ultimately funded 10 teams. Behind this numerical growth lies the passion of BNBU's faculty and students to embrace change and innovate, as well as the university's commitment to continuously increasing its investment in teaching innovation.
Dr. Vivien CHAN, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, also expressed sincere gratitude to all teams that submitted proposals, and detailed the rigorous "anonymous double-blind cross-review" mechanism of this year's program. She encouraged everyone to embrace cutting-edge trends such as artificial intelligence while not forgetting to explore the infinite possibilities in humanities, business, and other diverse fields.
Puzzle Pieces Unite, Inheriting the Warmth of Education
During the Launch Ceremony, representatives of the 10 funded teams placed their unique puzzle pieces onto the "S-P-A-R-K" display board. Each piece represented a distinctive project, and when they finally fit seamlessly together, a complete picture of innovation emerged. This was not only the official launch of the projects but also a symbol of interdisciplinary and cross-field wisdom converging.
The event also featured a meaningful "Easter egg": some of the materials used at the event were specially produced by last year's Spark Fund funded team — Dr. Hu Fan's team from FHSS. Focusing on "Sustainable Development and Event Innovation," the team transformed environmental concepts from classroom theory into real campus practice, vividly illustrating the positive cycle of project outcomes giving back to the campus.
Inspiration Takes Root, a Symphony of Frontier and Reality
During the opening report session, the 10 teams presented their project design ideas and implementation pathways.
AI-Empowered Personalization and Cognitive Synchronization
The team of Rongrong CHEN and Rui MENG is striving to build an AI-assisted personalized learning system that tailors learning paths to individual needs.
The team of Caroline Xiaojing LU and Shilei LI has developed a "Teacher-Student-Machine" tripartite classroom cognitive synchronization agent, aiming to provide real-time teaching decision support for instructors by quantifying a "synchronization index" with AI avatar assistance.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Industry-Academia Transformation
The team of Xiaowen SHAN focuses on low-altitude e-VTOL industry-academia integration, transforming the real engineering iteration process of drones — including 33 invention patents — into a teaching case library to address teaching pain points in the low-altitude economy.
The team of Bingqing QU and Zhehua HU, jointly formed by faculty and students from computer science and business, explores an interdisciplinary sandbox for the social costs of AI in autonomous driving scenarios.
The AI quantitative finance experimental platform, developed by the team of Tiger He XIAO and Tao HUANG, is dedicated to helping students understand the underlying logic of investment.
Humanities, Social Sciences, and Localized Innovation
The CCAJ film education project, led by the team of Fei DAI, explores localized film education theories with an Eastern perspective.
The team of Jianing CHEN utilizes AI to reconstruct a six-module workflow for comparative etymology between Old Chinese and Indo-European languages, seamlessly integrating with existing course assessments.
Real Campus and Sustainable Ecology
The campus life growth platform "BNBU Banxue," created by the team of Chengwa CHEONG, has already served over 1,800 students through its sports check-in module during the pilot phase.
The modern statistics digital textbook, developed by the team of Xiaoling PENG and Xiebing SONG, achieves seamless integration of textbook content, interactive experiments, and AI-powered intelligent practice.
The team of Jenny Shujuan XIAO and Qixing LI plans to introduce local ecological farm cases from Zhuhai into a sustainable entrepreneurship simulation game to enhance classroom interaction.
Conclusion
The 2026 CTL Spark Fund is not only a launch of projects but also a starting point for implementing transdisciplinary and cross-field teaching innovations, and a platform for teams to exchange ideas and inspire one another.
The spark has been ignited, and the picture is taking shape. We look forward to the teams producing more exemplary outcomes in the coming project cycle, continuously injecting new vitality into BNBU's high-quality education.
