"Beyond Boundaries" T&L Lecture Series #14 | New Pedagogical Model: Assisted Teaching and Learning with Al Successfully Held

On May 11, 2026, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) hosted the fourteenth "Beyond Boundaries" T&L Lecture Series, featuring Dr. Thomas Canhao XU, Assistant Professor of the Department of Statistics and Data Science at BNBU. The lecture focused on an award-winning AI-assisted pedagogical model that bridges data science and liberal arts education in the AI era.

Dr. Thomas Canhao XU speaking at the lecture

Dr. XU, a “Practitioner-Academic” with nearly 20 years of combined academic and high-tech industry experience, presented the pedagogical model developed for his core general education course Hands on Data Analytics for Everyone. Dr. XU identified four major structural dilemmas existing in general education within modern higher education. These include the cognitive divide between arts students and science and engineering students, a disconnection between theoretical learning and practical application, a mismatch between cultivated abilities and actual social needs caused by rigid standardized teaching, and the alienation of value cultivation reflected in the neglect of students’ ethical awareness and social responsibility development.

The speech was followed by an engaging Q&A session, where about 25 attendees discussed practical implementation strategies, ethical guidelines for human-AI collaboration in classrooms, and how to adapt the model to different disciplinary contexts.

Q&A session

This lecture not only highlights BNBU’s accomplishments in AI-enhanced pedagogy and transdisciplinary education, but also demonstrates the university’s leadership in advancing award-winning, nationally recognized teaching innovations. Moving forward, CTL will continue to host more lectures in the series to promote educational innovation and excellence at BNBU.
