At the start of the new semester on March 4, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) organized the Induction Program (IP), which included two workshops designed to support new faculty and teaching support staff in strengthening their teaching practices.

Workshop Series Overview

1. Practical Implications of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) and Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA)

Dr. Jesse Owen HEARNS-BRANAMAN, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Communication (FHSS), led the first workshop on "Practical Implications of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) and Criterion-Referenced Assessment (CRA)." The session emphasized the importance of aligning graduate attributes with course objectives and assessment design. Discussions covered strategies for distributing assessments throughout the semester to promote continuous learning, as well as methods for developing clear criteria to ensure consistent grading and clarify expectations for students. Participants also explored differences in assessment practices across disciplines and considered both the potential benefits and challenges of using AI in grading.

2. E-learning: Brief Introduction and Tutorial on iSpace

Ms. Suri Suyi LI, IT officer (ITSC), provided a hands-on demonstration of iSpace, BNBU’s Moodle-based e-learning platform. The session offered practical guidance on navigating the system, uploading content, and using its various tools to enhance teaching and boost student engagement. The training aimed to help instructors make effective use of digital resources in their teaching and strengthen communication with students.

Program Impact

The Induction Program brought together 20 faculty and teaching support staff and received positive feedback from participants. The workshops were particularly appreciated for their practical focus on course design, assessment, and the application of digital teaching tools. Through these sessions, new colleagues gained a clearer understanding of BNBU’s teaching expectations and support resources available to them. The program reflects BNBU’s ongoing commitment to enhancing teaching quality and supporting faculty development, while also highlighting the university’s efforts to promote innovative, student-centered teaching across the university.
